Brief
Design a solution for L’Oreal that reimagines Maison Margiela and its luxury fragrance line, Replica.
Research
Skin is not the same substance in January as it is in July. A study of 140 subjects found measurable seasonal shifts in pH, water loss, and blood flow. Heat raises sebum and sweat and lowers pH. Cold dries the skin, pushes pH alkaline, and weakens the barrier.
Fragrance responds to all of it. Heat speeds evaporation, cold slows it, and humidity changes how long a scent lasts. The same bottle performs differently across the year because the skin under it changed, not the formula.
Luxury buyers already feel this. They keep three to seven bottles and rotate by season, but without a plan. Beach Walk in summer and Jazz Club in winter read as two different people, and most of the collection sits unopened for months.
Metamorphosis replaces the rotation with one signature that evolves. The base formula holds the identity. Four seasonal variations adjust to the wearer's chemistry. Seasonal change stops being a problem to manage and becomes the reason to come back.
Concept
Metamorphosis starts with a consultation, either in a flagship boutique or through a guided digital intake. A specialist works through preferences, memories, and the feeling someone wants a fragrance to produce. It takes the time a bespoke commission takes, because the result has to hold for a year.
From that session, a master perfumer composes the Base Formula. One hundred milliliters, numbered blank label, and the constant everything else is built on.
Four times a year, a 30 ml variation follows. Each one is that same signature recalibrated rather than a new fragrance:
Lighter and fresher, for rising humidity and time spent outdoors.
Brighter, formulated for heat, sweat, and travel.
Richer and warmer, for cooling air and transitional dressing.
Deeper and enveloping, for dry skin and indoor heat.
Every delivery includes application guidance for that season's skin: pulse points in summer when projection runs high, layering onto fabric in winter when dryness cuts longevity. Each variation is designed to sit over the Base, so the wearer keeps one identity across four expressions.
